Emily Faye's New Single "When It Comes To Leaving" plus a Q & A

Its a little known fact that Nashville Callings first live event was in January 2019 and who opened the show, it was Emily Faye. That was 2 and a half years ago. She has a brand new track out on May 27th and we asked her about it.

So Emily, we have had the pleasure of listening to your latest song in advance and we think its a cracker, I would say your best yet. We thought it would be a good idea to send you over some questions so our readers could get to know you and the new song a little better

Q1, So can you tell our readers how this song came about?

A, This song was born during the lockdown when I had a zoom writing session scheduled with Jess Thristan. I had written down the idea of writing about that feeling you get when it comes to leaving the ones you love but all you want to do is stay - I am in a long distance relationship and I travel back and forth to Jersey a lot so this feeling is constantly with me. This song actually comforts me when I’m on the plane sometimes! The lyric ‘I just gotta touch town then I’ll be ok’ I repeat that in my head quite a bit.

Q2, Once you had decided that “this” song was going to be the next single, what happened next?

A, The next part was finding a producer! My usual go to power house producer Sue McMillan was about to fly to Nashville, so I went with another trusted colleague and production wizard Tim Prottey-Jones! I sent him a little bedroom demo of the track and then we chatted about the kind of vibe we thought would suit it and got to working.

Q3. Lets talk about arrangements, as I opened our studio up over 2 years ago and let me tell you, a song can go a hundred ways from the basic worktape! So what was your inspiration ?

A, I created a playlist of songs for reference for Tim. This included the following songs: ‘Landslide’ Fleetwood Mac, ‘Rooms on Fire’ Stevie Knicks, ‘Magic’ Jillian Jacqueline, and ‘Girl Who Didn’t Care’ by Tenille Townes and I wrote down the aspects of each track I liked in terms of the production vibe, but of course wanted to make sure it was still ‘Emily Faye’.

Q4, As we have already said earlier, we loved the song, what's your favourite moment in it, the section, where you still cant wait to hear. After all, recording a track can get pretty heavy and usually after recording a song and have heard it like a thousand times, you think, oh not again.

A, Haha! Yes totally. My favourite bit actually is when it goes to the quiet part at about 2:28 and then builds up again for the ending. I love the contrast there. I also love the backing vocals. Such a big fan of backing vocals, they just make a track come ALIVE. I also love how to drums are constantly driving the song throughout.

Q5. So any more plans for more co-writes in the future?

A, Yes 100%. I love co-writing, always up for a co-write and I just think magical things happen with more than one head in a room sometimes!

Q6. Can you tell us if there is any more new music coming out as 2022 rolls along?

A, Well, I would LOVE to have some more new music coming out this year for sure. I’m currently trying to make some decisions about the next song after this one and what vibe and direction I feel myself going in. I’ve dipped my toe back into the country waters with this latest single, so I’m not sure if I should stay there or try something new! So watch this space!

Q7. Are you touring this year?, can we or our readers see you anywhere live

A, Currently I am trying to write as much as possible, my main focus right now is writing and recording some more new material that I’m super proud of.

I am hoping to tour later on in the year though so keep an eye out for dates on my website!

Thanks so much for this little glimpse in the your week, good luck with the track on May 27th. Hannah has a new track out on the same day, so you are release day buddies, how about that!

Track review

Oh and what a pleasure it was listening to this awesome summer song. Right from the get-go the song has this terrific beat that makes your feet move and I start tapping the table or any hard surface around, its infectious.

The track opens up with a deep throaty guitar lick and drums setting the early pace, but the song is full of layers, both vocally and lush with instruments.

Emily sets out the song up with a lovely opening verse with an acoustic guitar added to the mix, followed by a banjo or a resonator deep in the background, but the lush bv's and harmonies come at you thick and fast.

Soon we are into the chorus which is so dead catchy but the song has almost 2 hooks, and one that I am humming for days, (god damn it, get out of my head ear worm) "When it comes to leaving" is a great hook but its followed up by "Wanna do is stay" its a slam dunk!

Claps are added in just the perfect spots too and I'm smiling with muscles I havent used in a while, it almost hurts. As a co-write with Jess Thristan this is mining gold, get them back into a room quick! That's our opinion,

Now anyone that knows me, knows that I have fast tracked myself into the recording and mixing world, starting from scratch just over a 12 months ago. Its something that I have put hundreds and hundreds of hours into and this production is where I am aiming to get to in the next few months. It is just top draw. Tim Prottey-Jones brings the whole playbook to the fore in this cracker of a song. Nothing is left out.

We have even got a beautiful breakdown section at around 2.30 in the song, as Emily mentions above, which I would say is one of my fav bits too so not surprised that she would single this out too, but the last chorus and outro will take some beating.

Emily mentioned she gave Tim a few reference tracks and I can hear some of those influences in this track, especially Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

For me this is the track of the 2022 so far and I listen to a lot of Pop-Country.

Its out on May 27th, download and stream it, you'll just love it.
